Grigorievka Gorge
Grigorievka Gorge (Chon-Ak-Suu) runs about 35 km into the Kungey Ala-Too from the village of Grigorievka on the north shore of Issyk-Kul, around 40 km east of Cholpon-Ata. A gravel road climbs through Tian Shan spruce and meadows, and three small lakes lie higher up the valley. Yurt camps in the lower valley, at roughly 2,000 to 2,200 m, serve meals and rent horses in summer. Most visitors come for a day of walking and picnics from June to September, by taxi or jeep tour from Cholpon-Ata.

What Grigorievka Gorge is
Grigorievka Gorge, known locally as Chon-Ak-Suu, runs about 35 km into the Kungey Ala-Too from the village of Grigorievka on the north shore of Issyk-Kul, around 40 km east of Cholpon-Ata. A gravel road follows the river up through Tian Shan spruce, and the valley opens into meadows at roughly 2,000 to 2,200 m before narrowing again toward three small lakes higher up. It is the north shore's easiest mountain day: green, shaded and reachable without a trek.
What there is to do
- Drive or walk up the valley to the meadows, where most people stop for a picnic by the river.
- Continue to the lakes further up the gorge, the upper one the hardest to reach.
- Ride horses, which families at the camps hire out by the hour.
- Walk the forest tracks off the main road, away from the picnic spots by the water.
Many visitors combine the gorge with the neighbouring Semenovka valley in one day, both being short drives from the same stretch of shore.
When to go
From late June to the end of September, when the yurt camps in the lower valley are open and the meadows are at their best. In April and May, and after heavy rain at any time, landslides can block the gorge road. In winter the upper valley is under snow and the camps are shut. Mornings and evenings are cold at this height even in July.
Getting there
From Cholpon-Ata it is 56 km and about an hour and three-quarters: roughly 37 km of tarmac along the shore to Grigorievka village, then 18 to 20 km of gravel up the gorge. Most sources agree an ordinary car manages the main road in dry conditions, but a 4x4 is safer for the upper lake and after rain. Taxis and organised jeep trips run from Cholpon-Ata. Karakol is 125 km away, about three hours, allowing an hour for the gravel out of the gorge.
Practical notes
A small entry fee is collected at the gorge, in cash in som. The yurt camps in the lower valley serve meals and take overnight guests in summer, but they are simple: no electricity to rely on, cold water and outdoor toilets. There is no shop and mobile signal is patchy once you are into the forest. Most travellers come for the day from Cholpon-Ata and are back at the lake by evening.
